Judge Backs VMB on Teeth Cleening

The Veterinary Medical Board (VMB) of California has instructed a Southern California woman to stop teaching, performing and directing others to perform a popular anesthesia-free teeth-cleaning procedure.

EPA Stop Order on Illegal Pet Flea Control Products

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has ordered distributors and retailers in California and Hawai'i to stop selling counterfeit Advantage and Frontline products for control of fleas and ticks on dogs and cats.

Long-Term Results With DARthroplasty

DARthroplasty (Dorsal Acetabular Rim arthroplasty) is a technique developed to treat canine hip dysplasia by removing strips of bone from the iliac crest, contouring them over the femoral head, and suturing them to the dorsal hip joint capsule. In a new paper on this subject, Dr. Dean Gahring reports on his follow-up studies of dogs that had a DARthroplasty a year or more prior to his study. The results were both enlightening and encouraging.

TPLO for Smaller Dogs

Until recently the Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) procedure for treating cranial cruciate ligament ruptures could be performed only on larger dogs, typically 45 lbs. or more. Now smaller plate implants are available that permit the surgery to be performed on dogs as small as 20 lbs.

Cats and dogs are living longer, just like their human owners. Old age is an accumulation of changes that occur to the body over time. The good news is that many of the conditions of old age can be controlled or even prevented if detected and treated early. This is why we are actively developing and promoting a Senior Wellness Program at SCVH.

DARthroplasty - What Is It?

SCVH is offering a new surgical procedure for treating canine hip dysplasia that has progressed too far for TPO. This technique, which reconstructs the dorsal acetabular rim (DAR), is called DARthroplasty.

Canine Elbow Dysplasia.

A new treatment, called "Proximal Ulnar Osteotomy", is available to treat dysplasia in the elbow of dogs. Read about it in a new article by Dr. Dean Gahring of the SCVH staff.

We have added a huge punch to our diagnostic capabilities with the purchase of a Toshiba 400L ultrasound unit. It has given us the capability of imaging many organs of the body in a safe and noninvasive manner.

It's Tick Season

Summer is the time of year when ticks are most prevalent in the canyons and mesas of San Diego County. The deer tick is a vector for Lyme Disease. Be sure to have your dog vaccinated against this debilitating disease if he or she is likely to come in contact with ticks. Also, SCVH now carries Frontline®, which is effective against both fleas and ticks.

Is FebrezeTM Toxic?

There has been a big controversy of late whether Proctor & Gamble's recently introduce fabric freshener called FebrezeTM is toxic to pets. The conclusion of the ASPCA, JAVMA, and other professional veterinary organizations is a resounding "No!"

Doggie Football Knee

A new surgical procedure, called Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy, or TPLO for short, is available to repair cranial cruciate ligament ruptures in dogs.   [The anterior cruciate ligament is often damaged when football players suffer knee injuries.]   The TPLO procedure can returned all types of dogs to full pre-injury function and athletic capability.  It can also prevent progressive degenerative joint disease.   The surgeons at San Carlos Veterinary Hospital were the first to offer the TPLO procedure in San Diego County, starting in January 1998.
