Meet Our Doctors

Dr. Gahring received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of California at Davis in 1970. Postgraduate education included a one-year internship and a two-year surgical residency at the Animal Medical Center in New York City. He taught both as an instructor and an assistant professor from 1973 to 1976 at The Ohio State University. In 1975 he passed the board certification requirements and examination and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. Dr. Gahring came to San Carlos Veterinary Hospital as Chief of Surgery and co-owner in 1978.
Dr. Gahring is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), California VMA, and the San Diego County VMA. He is also a member of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS), the Association for Veterinary Orthopedic Research and Education (AVORE) and the Veterinary Orthopedic Society (VOS). Dr. Gahring has served as President of AVORE in 1985-86, a Trustee from 1996-1998, and as a Regent in 2003. He was President of the San Diego County VMA in 1989 and served as member, then chairman of the Ethics and Professional Relations Committee 1978-80, delegate to the CVMA House of Delegates 1981-82. He is a certified PennHIP veterinarian.
Dr. Gahring served as Nominations Committee member, then chairman for the ACVS 1986-88. He was a member of the CVMA Continuing Education Committee from 1980-85.
Dr. Gahring has taught and lectured extensively nationally and has published extensively in both veterinary medical journals and textbooks. He also lectures locally to schools, dog clubs, and local groups. He is married, the father of two daughters and a Teacup Poodle named Bebe. He loves to play golf and to travel.

Dr. Persky received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1972 from the University of California at Davis . The next two years were spent with the Surgical Research and Nutrition Laboratory at the Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center in Denver, Colorado. He was then assigned as Chief of the Division of Clinical Surgical Research at the Letterman Army Institute of Research, San Francisco, California. Entering private practice in 1975, Dr. Persky came to San Carlos Veterinary Hospital as an associate veterinarian, then became a co-owner in 1978. He has advanced training and a special interest in Thoracic, Cardiovascular, Neurological, and Orthopedic surgery.
Dr. Persky is a member of the major veterinary medical associations, including the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), San Diego County VMA, and the California VMA. He is also a member of the Association for Veterinary Research and Education (AVORE). In 2004, Dr. Persky was awarded the prestigious Donald G. Low - California Veterinary Medical Association Practitioner Fellowship at the University of California Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. He was a member of the SDVMA Ethics and Professional Relations Committee. He has published and he lectures both nationally and locally. He also speaks to local school groups.
Dr. Persky is married, the father of one daughter and a Standard Poodle named "Abbey", and he plays racquetball.

Dr. Kus received his Master of Science degree in Anatomy from the University of California at Davis in 1979 and received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from UCD in 1984. He also completed an intensive training and research program in Radiology and has published in veterinary journals. He came to San Carlos Veterinary Hospital in 1984 as an Associate Veterinarian with a special interest in Radiology and veterinary Dentistry. He has also become accomplished in endoscopy.
Dr. Kus is married, the father of one daughter and a cat named "Pooty", and likes carpentry and travel to Mexico.

The newest addition to our hardworking staff was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. Laurel received her Bachelor of Science in Biology at the University of Hawaii in 1985. She received her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine at Colorado State University in 1989 and has been in small animal practice in San Diego since graduation. Laurel is a member of the La Mesa Sunrise Rotary Club.
Laurel spends most of her free time swing dancing, and also likes hiking and rollerblading. She gives lots of TLC to her two cats, Rosa and Leah.
