Long-Term Results With DARthroplasty DARthroplasty (Dorsal Acetabular Rim arthroplasty) is a technique developed to treat canine hip dysplasia by removing strips of bone from the iliac crest, contouring them over the femoral head, and suturing them to the dorsal hip joint capsule. In a new paper on this subject, Dr. Dean Gahring reports on his follow-up studies of dogs that had a DARthroplasty a year or more prior to his study. The results were both enlightening and encouraging.

TPLO for Smaller Dogs Until recently the Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) procedure for treating cranial cruciate ligament ruptures could be performed only on larger dogs, typically 45 lbs. or more. Now smaller plate implants are available that permit the surgery to be performed on dogs as small as 20 lbs.
Senior Wellness Cats and dogs are living longer, just like their human owners. Old age is an accumulation of changes that occur to the body over time. The good news is that many of the conditions of old age can be controlled or even prevented if detected and treated early. This is why we are actively developing and promoting a Senior Wellness Program at SCVH.

Doggie Football Knee

A new surgical procedure, called Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy, or TPLO for short, is available to repair cranial cruciate ligament ruptures in dogs. [The anterior cruciate ligament is often damaged when football players suffer knee injuries.] The TPLO procedure can returned all types of dogs to full pre-injury function and athletic capability. It can also prevent progressive degenerative joint disease. The surgeons at San Carlos Veterinary Hospital were the first to offer the TPLO procedure in San Diego County, starting in January 1998.
