Case of the Month: July 1999

Bela Penland

Bela was only eight weeks old when she was bitten in the face by a pit bull. Bela is about the cutest English Bulldog puppy you can imagine, and I have no idea why anyone would want to hurt her.

Bela’s bite created a severe fracture of the right side of her upper jaw (maxilla). We formulated a plan how to fix this little pup’s jaw. This was going to be quite a task, because a bulldog’s jaw is usually askew at birth. We were going to try and return it to its pre-bite condition. Under general anesthesia, we passed a transmaxillary stainless steel pin from the right side of the upper jaw to the left side. We then created further compression at the fracture site with a large stainless steel wire attached to both ends of our pin.

Bela grew so fast, that we had to take all of this metal out of her mouth after only three weeks. This picture above is of Bela shortly after everything was removed. The fracture had healed completely.
