Tips on Finding Your Lost Animal

• Start your search immediately - don't wait for "Fido" to come home.
• Pets lose their tags. Don't assume just because your pet has a tag he or she will be returned.
• Search your neighborhood both on foot and in your car.
• Knock on doors for a two-block radius from where you last saw your pet.
• Be sure to check all the animal shelters in your area (see below). Check in person, at least once every 72 hours. Telephone the shelters in between your visits.

• Talk to your neighbors and ask them to keep an eye out for your pet.
• Post "Lost Pet" notices with a picture of your pet in your neighborhood.
• Check the "Found Pet" classified ads in your local newspaper to see if someone has found your pet. Run a "Lost Pet" classified ad in your local newspaper. Listed below are the online classified ad sections of several major San Diego County Newspapers:

1. Don't lose hope - keep checking! Whoever found your pet may not return it right away.
2. License your dog and keep your address and telephone information current with the licensing agency.
3. Consider having your veterinarian insert a pet tracking microchip under you pet's skin. These will allow him or her to be identified even the pet tag is lost.
4. Keep a current picture of your pet. It will be helpful if you have to make a "Lost Pet" poster.
